Anna is arrested on 16 August 2011

Anna Hazare was arrested by the Delhi police ahead of his mass protest against the introduction of the government version of the Lokpal bill in the parliament

Social activist and one of the civil society representatives of the Lokpal Drafting Committee-Anna Hazare was detained by the Delhi police today, 16 August 2011 in order to prevent him from organizing his mass protest against corruption.

The Delhi police on Monday, 15 August 2011, denied permission to Anna Hazare to organize his fast at the Jai Prakash Narain (JPN) park citing various reasons including law and order problem. However, Anna Hazare decided to carry on his protest as planned. But according to sources, Anna Hazare has been arrested by the Delhi police at his home ahead of the indefinite fast that was scheduled to begin today.

Team Anna Hazare decided to go on an indefinite fast from 16 August 2011 against the introduction of the government version of the Lokpal bill in the parliament. They claimed the anti-graft bill to be weak as it does not included Prime minister and the other higher judiciary under the Lokpal purview and demanded the introduction of the Jan Lokpal bill (drafted by the civil society representatives of the Lokpal committee) in the parliament.
